BOX STUDIO ASSESSMENT 1 (BLOG 2)

ANOTHER class I am taking this semester is Cinema studies focusing on Australian cinema. When watching Mad Max Fury Roads I couldn’t help but feel an immense sense of awe when this scene (3.05 onwards) played on screen. Perhaps it was the beautifully composed orchestral soundtrack paired with the pain and disappointment you felt via the characters body language that just made this scene so emotional. This shot in particular made me step back and just appreciate the cinematography of it all. This is a perfectly composed wide shot, at eye level with the subject, this really places us in conjunction with the actress giving a greater depth of feeling. Likewise the location is just so baron, vast and empty which really connects with how the subject is feeling. The lighting is incredible, it sets a real harsh tone on the land but also shows hints of warmth just allowing us to focus in on small details of the main character. The movement produced by the sand and the fact that the subject has been placed within that stopping the flow of the sand really just emphasises us to notice her. That things continue to go on around her pain.

For me I just really connected with this shot, like I stated in my previous blog I want this studio to be a place where I can experiment and create new pieces that Im inspired by. I feel like this shot was so beautifully composed and all the components worked together in a really incredible way, so I guess I want to learn more about how to create these kind of scenes.

I recently went to the cinema to watch Dunkirk which was cinematically exquisite, I want to continue to watch films in particular ones I don’t really know much about. I want to watch the shots, how they’re lit, how they are composed, what the acting is like, how the sound matches the shot and the overall feeling people get from them. I really want to learn more though both films and this studio how to achieve great composition, lighting, acting, sound etc. for a shot that I want to stand out or make powerful.

I also really want to focus on connecting the audience to the shot. Like in the way I felt something with this shot. I really would love to learn more about how that is created and what stylistic elements enhance a shot.
