Reflection

Recently my meeting with Robin led to us discussing my possible film ideas. We concluded that  my observations were split between lighthearted and funny and sad and in depth. So where to go with that is quite difficult. I definitely wanted to explore the more experimental side of a film. At the minute I am quite confused with where I am going with my ideas. They often seem very unfinished but perhaps this is a good idea because this can be easily formed and manipulated later in the process.

These are some of the notes I took for one idea, I think there is a lot of scope with it but I haven’t fleshed it out enough to really know what I want from it.

 FILM IDEA:

I have always had a fascination with stars and the night. Perhaps an ambitious film idea but I really wanted to incorporate something to do with the beauty and isolation of the universe. I envision perhaps starting this off similar to my observation a person in a car, confusing shots through windows/reflections/different lights and shadows to communicate the ambiguity of the situation. Perhaps the subject sitting in the passenger seat looks up or out through the window where the camera (in my head i envision a drone) lifting higher and higher making this individual seem small. I think we so often think that the stars are so far away but I also want to focus on how small and minute we as humans are. I would perhaps want to try and communicate how expansive our world is by focusing on the smallness off us as humans. I would want to incorporate lots of night time shots of the stars, of people from afar. All shot at night to really give that secluded feeling.

I want it to start with complete darkness and have voice over deep mans voice slow. boy fairy lights in room staring up at them, sequence of all the different lights obsessed with, why is there no light in the sky .. sometime you have to go through the darkness in order to see the light. starts with darkness (monologue) ends with darkness but stars/light fade in (ends with words). You my young boy need to be the brightest star in the darkest of nights.

  • shots of boy in car (handheld)
  • boys minds loud feel sort of raw, done in car
  • side view looking up at sky white background black silhouette stars in the body implied they’re part of each other
  • symbolic experimental style
  • start separate entities
  • silhouette shots of night sky (silence)
  • perhaps monologue about  shots of darkness, stars (longs exposure)
  •  holding up light to sky. experiment with light,

idea of its content. “sometime you have to go through the darkness in order to see the light”

its form.  slightly experimental in its form, want it to start with complete darkness and have voice over deep mans voice slow. Talking about something in relation to the night sky and darkness itself. Guy or young boy in room with fairy lights on roof looking up at them Blue tones light. Perhaps a shot where he walks past window with silhouette back light. Obsessed with lights, shots of heaps of different forms of light, old lamps etc. zoomed in on boy sitting in his bed. goes outside to darkness very low lighting shadow, low lit face. Looks up but cant find any light, brings a torch outside and shines it up to sky. lots of long shots etc.

“sometime you have to go through the darkness in order to see the light” goes back in room sits on edge of bed. goes to a field and looks up, walks around streets very low lighting shadow, low lit face. ends with darkness but stars/light fade beeping sound then silence.

planned approach to production.

  • have 3 locations
  • boys bedroom with all different forms of light
  • night time shoot in city with all the lights
  • night time shoot in field with stars

challenges.

  1. camera ability, getting the focus of the stars and exposure right when all the shots are at night
  2. weather permitting has to be clear skies
  3. finding subjects
