Translating Observation IND EX 4 REFLECTION.

When given our two film clips to recreate as a group we all watched them and had a discussion of how we would shoot them. We organised who would be the actors, sound recordist, director and camera operator. We used the classroom to shoot because there was lots of space to achieve what we needed. However our idea wasn’t to focus on the location and all the elements such as costume and props. We wanted to focus on the camera shots and overall representation of the film clip.

I think as a group we worked really well, we got all the shots done within time. We were able to use what was around us in an efficient manner to get the pieces done. We shared the workload around evenly and all had our roles which we stuck too.

Recreate Video Part 1/2

Our first piece we recreated was “Love in the afternoon” this is a one shot piece with no camera movement. The focus is on the female subject and the male subject is mostly obscured and hidden in the frame. I really love how we achieved this piece. We replicated the movements and the dialog well. I think we achieved a very well put together scene. It reflected the slight uncomfortableness and awkwardness as seen in the original. No music or background sounds were added to enhance this aesthetic. We only filmed a few different shots to get it right just to keep that natural feel to it. For the editing my idea was just to brighten up the shot, I added a Kodak 5205 Fuji colour over the top and added a few green tones which is similar to the original. I also wanted this to assist in highlighting the red tones in the shirt which is a main focal point to the shot. I added the french subtitles to the film, just as a juxtaposition from the english ones in the original.

Recreate Video Part 2/2

The second piece Vicki and Christina Barcelona involved a few more shots. So when organising this we planned out what scenes we need to film the whole dialog and what camera angles we only needed certain dialog for. The difficulty I had with this one was whilst editing some of the audio levels were quite different. When piecing together I found that while some of the audio was really good quality some of the others had a lot of background noise. So in order to cancel this out and make it a bit smoother I added in background cafe noises and transitioned the other audio and dialog together. I also added a blue steel colour to the shots just to enhance it.  I also found with this piece that because we had different shots and different angles the lighting constantly changed through the windows and therefore some of the shots were lighter and brighter than others, therefore some of the exposure was different. IN general this made editing hard because what effect worked for one looked different on another so I tried my best to use exposure and other editing techniques to make them look the same. However it didn’t come out as clean as I had hoped.

The outcome of both I think came out really well in general I think we applied our selves well throughout the exercise and were able to achieve two pieces that accurately re made the two film scenes.
