Observation #12

The Invention of Velcro.

A small observation but one that I think holds a quirky idea, I was wearing a felt jacket of some sort and whilst I was walking the streets of London I was walking a little too close to the brick wall. The streets around us was really beautiful and really old, small semi detached houses, little pubs and very old fashioned architecture. As I was admiring everything around me I sort of realised I wasn’t quite walking in a straight line and managed to rub my jacket on the brick wall. This then pulled on my jacket and it sort of got stuck and i was pulled back and couldn’t move. Upon closer inspection i noticed that the tiny little loops of my felt like jacket were weaved and caught into the little bobbles of the brick. I had to unhook them in order to move forward and I was left with a slightly frayed jacket. It was a funny situation because I instantly had the thought that maybe this was how they figured out velcro.

So for a film idea, I imagine something a little different and a bit bizarre. Perhaps an idea that could work or perhaps one that wouldn’t work. I would want it to have the charlie chaplain sort of feel to it. In black and white, perhaps filmed using an older camera, something that would be a silent film and lots of overreacting. I envision just one part, a group of 2 or 3 men in penguin suits and top hats all walking along the old streets, on man pushes the other into the wall and his arm gets stuck to the wall. whilst the others walk on and are oblivious to him falling. The other man keeps sticking and unsticking his arm to the wall in great amusement. He runs up to the other men and pushes them all into the wall and then they’re all beyond fascinated with this. I envision a shot where they are all just pressing all the body on the wall and pulling it off. I sort of feel like this idea would be based along the invention of velcro, in a witty, simple yet quite bold way.
