Genre and “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”

We looked into genre this week which is basically the categories in which they place films. When determining a genre you have to look at the story, characters, symbolism, film materials and narrative conventions. For example when we look at the genre fantasy we expect a quest plot, some kind of wizard, princess, king or goblin, there will be aired locations and more often than not it will have battles, love, conflict and comic relief. The genre is basically an expectation of how we view something, Can emerge with technology come from history, try and target genres to a particular audience. Originally they typically have been translated from literature such as romance and drama but dome have developed based on tastes of film such as the hollywood genre war romances. When referencing a hybrid which is the more than one genre in a movie basically bends the purity of the film what that does to story and where the film fits in film history is quite significant. The movie we watched was a girl walks home alone at night, whilst not at all my favourite film I can recognise the genre of it. This film was marketed as a vampire film, my expectations from this of course was immediately something like twilight, bad people who change for good when they meet that “special person”. Before we watched the film Dan mentioned how posters can change expectations, If you look at poster and a shimmery vampire  is on the from you have expectation of something more loving and lighthearted whimsical even, if he’s holding a girl you have differing expectations perhaps a love story and if you have vampire dripping with blood you have different expectation perhaps one of death and destruction. With this film I didn’t see the poster however form the first 10 minutes of the film I gained a sense this wasn’t a shimmery vampire kind of movie, the dark atmosphere, quite slow and eerie acting alongside with the music and setting of dead bodies allowed me to consider that this vampire movie was more pushed towards a horror kind of genre as well. source of image…
