NETMED WEEK 6

This weeks ideas were based on Culture/Technology and the internet, how its all used and what it means. Culture is referred to as society, language art, politics and religion and all the ways our culture functions and the things that impact on our lives. Technology is basically the media forms of writing, print, radio, TV, internet and film.

For us technology is a constant impact on us we live with technology in our pockets and rely on them heavily, its our alarm clock our entertainment, our interaction and communication and our way of creating. So in both the lecture and workshop we discussed the technological determinism, cultural materialism and post structuralism as theories I know white little about them.

In class my partner and I looked into post structuralism, to understand this we has to first find what structuralism is. In simplified terms its like an ant colony where we as people follow a structure in our everyday lives and the explanation is that human behaviour can be explained through a specific structure. However Post structuralism is set of anthropological and philosophical teachings when read and understood that attempt to help gain a better understanding and explain of what and people do what they do. (human interactions) – things that are constantly changing and adapting through time.  It attempts to take a finer more detailed look and interpretation of meanings behind things as opposed to giving a specific reason. For example getting in the morning and going to bed at night isn’t structural because we don’t all get up at the same time and go to bed at the same time. Whilst a percentage of people do this not everyone does, so post structuralism is basically looking at why so many people do this (because of their 9 to 5 job) and why others don’t. It doesn’t see it as a set way to function in our environment, as it differs.
