The Creative Type

Another thing we discussed was collaboration: Louise spoke about her experiences when working at ABC and what challenges were often faced when working in groups.

  • always have different teams, you don’t know who they are or what they want
  • Poor communication, where people don’t get what they want due to lack of discussion
  • ego’s, and people who want to control everything e.g. being creative goes hand in hand with having an eye for detail meaning they’re a perfectionist usually and this means that often people want control and power over these details
  • when people have contrasting ideas of the world and this goes head to head

So we spoke about to how to avoid this and the simple way to overcome many of this potential issues is to have empathy, an understanding of where other people are coming from. This means that when you find a disagreement, think about the other persons perspective and try and find a compromise without just being stubborn and demanding that you are always right.

Within the media we generally have pretty standard ideas of what kind of people work in the industry so, what is a creative type???

  • passionate, driven
  • maybe highly strung
  • controlling and dominant
  • neurotic
  • creative
  • extraverted but might be introvert
  • eccentric
  • pushing boundaries, bold

so what does this mean when working in a team? well firstly you will have a team who as creative personal will not be short of ideas, often the group will come up with innovative concepts and proposals that push the boundaries or whats normal within the media industry. However with this in mind sometimes passion and control can transition into an ego that might disallow some people to be open minded to new ideas. In general we must just be cautious about how we communicate with those in our team and be aware that everyone has valid opinions, if handled correctly I believe that the outcome of the work can be pretty fantastic.
