THE HERO’S JOURNEY

The héros journey is an interesting concept that I love looking at without going into great detail here is a very brief example of the hero’s journey in terms of The Hobbit. (SOURCE)

  • Call to adventure – How the hero receives the call to adventure, the call to his journey (Bilbo Baggins is invited on a quest to get back the dwarves treasure)
  • Refusal of the call – How the hero declines the offer to adventure (Bilbo enjoys his home life and declines the offer)
  • Answering the call – what drives the hero to accept the offer to a journey (he has a change of heart and quickly runs after them to accept the offer)
  • Guide/Mentor – what character help the hero get through the journey, giving aid and advice (Gandalf is the voice of logic, reason and is the one that holds the knowledge of the journey and helps both Bilbo and the dwarves keeping them together)
  • Talisman – a certain object that holds great significance to the hero (the ring become of significant importance to Bilbo so much so it becomes almost obsessive)
  • Companions – who and how they prove helpful (The dwarves and the friendships they’ve made, they help each other out when in trouble)
  • Crossing the threshold: hero enters the journey and leaves familiar world behind (when captured by the trolls and Bilbo is very far from his hobbit hole)
  • Test (allies vs. enemies) (Bilbo is taken to mountain by goblins, he escapes both goblins and Gollum to catch up with the group who thought he had left them.)
  • Reward stage – hero granted power, insight, knowledge etc. (Bilbo found a sense of purpose and courage along the way)
  • Road back – completion of journey (of course the trilogy continues but at the end of this he returns to his hobbit home)
