We started off this workshop watching everyone P2 videos (our self portraits), it’s really interesting to see not only how everyone views themselves but how everyone has a different style of praying who they are. I really loved how everyone’s video’s was so incredibly different yet we all still fit the brief.
We then further discussed sound and the importance of it before heading off to our workshop exercise for sound. The main things that stood out to me in our discussion was…
- When using narration don’t use lyric music or big orchestra sounds such as brass and trumpets, because this detracts from the voice over and makes it unclear.
- Ensure with narration that the music paired with it is higher or lower than the spoken word, use instruments like guitar or percussion.
- When using sounds bring forward/back and layer to create meaning, raising one will give significant and importance in scene.
- You want to the sound to be peaking at -6 to -3
- (back-laying) which is putting audio before and after edit to create a flow
- slam edits or cutting right with the visual is very rough and abrupt
- always use fading to create a better transition which will appear smoother and will soften the edit.
In general it was made clear that with any film or visual the sound is not only the most difficult part but the most important. It in a way is better to have good audio and bad visuals than the other way around. So this is something I am definitely taking in as I will begin heavily focusing my attention to the audio ensuring that it is clear and well edited.
