Initiative Post – Digital Media

Another thought that came up when reading David Gauntlett’s pieces was the idea of the rise of media in the form of internet and how this effects our learning.

This piece has allowed me to consider how I use media in my every life, how it has changed the way I live and how it has impacted on my learning. For me using media technology is not just an everyday thing, it is the most constant thing in my life. Phone, internet, social media, TV, cameras, film, I use it all, all day everyday. So how does this impact on me, is it good? is it beneficial?

When I learn today I use google to quickly research people, places, events and this is a good basis to find answers and information. Much like a book a library this for me is a quick and productive way to find what I am looking for. Like there are many books in a library there are thousands and thousands of websites which could assist me. Not only is this accessible on my computer but its also available on my phone which is on me at all times. This allows me to access information at any place at any time.

Ive also noticed over the past few years how Facebook has also become a useful platform for communication within a class. Often now we have group chats and pages where students can talk to each other and ask questions, similarly teachers are often in on these groups to also give help.

We as students are taking more initiative in our learning by using these platforms to further our education. The form of media and the internet is a much better way of learning it allows us to be more efficient, productive and resourceful.
