Media 1 Workshop 3:

One thing that I thought was very interesting was our discussion in today’s workshop about David Gaunett and the pieces he’s written about. Whilst we didn’t go into great depth about his specific ideas we began to vocalise our thoughts about people both active and passive in media. Being actively engaged in media we linked to social media and how we are using these platforms to create and comment.

Something that came up was our thoughts on twitter vs. snapchat. we covered how over time the use of social media changes, twitter as a form of networking used to be very popular for interaction between people, to comment on their daily lives, often celebrity thoughts etc. etc. When we think of twitter today the platform itself is less popular, it is less common amongst the individuals of our generation and new forms such as Facebook, Instagram and snapchat have become our main ways of connection. Twitter these days are more so used for quick information such as metro train updates, the news, customer service queries or questions. This has become a more informative and useful site for interaction. Snapchat however is more for social communication and a way to quickly interact with friends or family in a fun, lighthearted way. Often to comment on simple more personal things like food, your day, thoughts, ideas, jokes etc.

I thinks its important to note how the social media we use in our everyday lives is changing as we grow, in a way it shows how our generation shifts and adapts to the environment around us. Just like the way new media apps and networking sites come into popularity we ourselves adapt and want variation with our media and ways of communicating. It allows me to pose the question how long will Facebook be our main platform of social media before something else comes along? Im sure that soon enough Facebook will be the Myspace, and something else will become the new international networking site.
