(Quick backstory; It was my birthday this past weekend and I brought myself a Nintendo Switch along with buying the new Zelda: Breath of the Wild game.)
I recently have been playing “Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and am only on the cusp of this large landscape and exciting new adventure through the land of Hyrule. I have missed this world so much and am dying to get back into it, aiming to explore everything that is new and revisit the old classic favourite that are the staple for every Zelda game. But this got me thinking about a couple things when it comes to script writing and screen writing in general and that its the use of a agency, which we sort of briefly touched on at the end of class, as well as also looking at landscape as character and the ideas of retelling and reusing story, all of which fall into sub categories that I wish to delve into in later posts.
But to sum them up in this post and my current thoughts, going further into these ideas, I am looking at how agency works across other mediums when not being applied to video games. How we engage our audience and how we can make them feel immersed in the universe we are creating for them. This then relates top the importance of world building and landscapes as character, how they themselves contribute to this sense of ‘audience agency’ and using the worlds created as an important character or at least crucial element to bring in the audience and make them feel that immersion we want. Again I also mentioned retelling story and I am very interested in how we use over arching plots and in this cause landscapes and worlds and in the topic of video games ‘missions’ aka. rescue the princess aka. solve these temples to get these weapons…..and keep returning back to them, but changing the story and the landscapes to a degree to fit for things like re-play and re-watchability … To me this is important, in how agency is given for any media and I like the idea that this can be given through a story via the landscapes and hope i can further apply this to my future works.
