This week in story lab we looked into the Marvel Cinematic universe and how Marvel uses their, characters, films, tv shows and their continuing franchises in video gams and comic to appeal to a vast audiences, giving a range of different access points catered to fan boy/girl and those who aim to follow along the massive and entertaining storylines that Marvel has created.
Agent Carter
We began by looking at the film (Captain America: The First Avenger, 2011) and more specifically the set up of the character of Peggy Carter. Fans of the comic not only know Peggy Carter as an important part of there Captain America history, but as an important character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character was established and given a ‘Marvel One Shot’, a short film that gave (Agent Carter, 2015) its first legs spinning off the short film and character into her own TV show. The show was able to carry over fans of Peggy Carter from her first appearance as well as give their audience a whole bunch of access points that related to other films and tv shows related to the cinematic universe, such as the creation of the overarching organisation of S.H.E.I.L.D as well as setting up plot devises and ties to future titles.
This brief look at how Marvel utilises its franchises as a forms of transmedia, showed how ideas like, character, plot device, items, linking franchises etc.. Are all forms of successful ways to bring a devoted audience from any part of the franchise through each existing forms of the existing media and possibly discover more about said universe.
