Remix Culture

REMIX

Sound was popularised in the late 1930’s

A lot of films were remade for sound, Alice in wonderland and King Kong.

Printing press introduced the idea of mass culture and popular culture. Ideas and information could be spread widely around the world. How does reproducing something change both the original artefact and what is the end result. Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element, it’s presence in time and place.

The idea of the aura. Concept of the aura is little more than a feeling, it is linked to our experience. Is living in social media becoming more of an effective means of communication. You are getting a sense of someone through the various social mediums and expressions online. It not locked in theory. Imagine sitting on a hills side and looking out on a bunch of mountains, sun, wind, birds, it’s hard to capture the feeling associated towards an experience and moment, there is a wholeness to that feeling or the ‘aura’. Is it possible to capture the ‘aura’ when it has been reproduced or displayed in a media context? How authentic is the original production? How much is encoded in our memory of what feelings are triggered in each individual?

Eduardo Navas (Remix Theory) : Way of understanding how sampling and mashups work in music. As discos grew in popularity, the dj’s became more efficient in creating seamless transitions.
