This semester has ended even faster than I have imagined, and 12 weeks have passed in the blink of an eye. Looking back on the whole semester, in a variety of projects, I have not only learned new things, but also improved my original skills.Of course, I am now starting to enjoy the process of making a video. Even though it takes a good deal of time to shoot and edit the video, the whole process is delightful. It makes me become more and more fond of and interested in the major of media.Today, with regard to the last project, I shall talk about what I learned, what difficulties I encountered and how I resolved the difficulties in the assignment.
First of all, I would like to talk about what I have learned. Technically, what I have learned the most is film editing. As a student who has only been exposed to film editing for about 1 year, there were a lot of times when I cannot use editing to achieve some of my expected effects, which made me very frustrated. Once I thought that, if one did not have superb editing techniques, he might not be able to produce excellent videos. However, in this assignment, especially when observing the students’ works, you can obtain a new idea, that film editing is not about high difficulty, but about how to use it reasonably. Taking my final as an example, when I showed everyone the rough cut, some classmates gave me a suggestion, that segmenting long video clips followed by re-splicing according to the rhythm of the music would produce a different effect. I tried out with a dubious attitude. You can find that the whole video has become a lot more wonderful, and also more professional. It is with only a simple editing that it reached this effect. From now on, during video production, I should consider how to use the knowledge I have learned to achieve the best effect, instead of struggling with the use of high-difficulty editing. On the other hand, there is team cooperation, because this subject is mainly based on group assignments, thus in many occasions, you need to work with the teammates. To be honest, throughout the duration of this assignment, I had wanted to leave my teammate and to do the assignment on my own. It was not because that my teammate was not good enough, but because that conflict of opinions would arise easily between two people, especially when planning and filming the works. Nevertheless, after experiencing the whole project, I would like to show my gratitude to my teammate; even if we had some arguments, we still tolerated and understood each other, as well as comforted and relied on each other. In the future workplace, team work will certainly play a major part, therefore tolerance and understanding will be very important.
Next, I have to reflect on my mistakes during the project. First, the sense of time was poor. Our filming did not run smoothly and it was not just because our client was too busy to comply with our schedule. Another very important point was that our time planning was very improper. For example, say we had to film this week, but we only thought of renting the studio by then; this led to the result that we could not rent the studio at the time we wanted. Secondly, there was not enough communication, especially with the client. Now as we reflect, there was too little communication with our client, which caused us to be unable to get the client’s schedule in time to arrange the filming, but also caused the client to have unthorough understanding of what we were doing. Also, there was not much communication between the two of us filming organizers, which caused our plan to be undetermined till very late which delayed a lot of time. Therefore, I think that in my future study and life, it is very important to note that I should gain a sense of time, as well as manage and plan all the arrangements in a reasonable way. Moreover, I should keep communicating, whether it is with the teachers, the classmates or any other person who is related to my assignment. This work is hardly a well-done work, for it’s far from my original plan. I used to think that I was going to make a video with a more interesting plot, instead of the present one which is simpler and without too many story details to support the work. As I am writing this reflection, I couldn’t help but think that if I had made fuller preparations in the early stage, I might have been able to create a more interesting and innovative video. Though there are many regrets, they will all become my experience. In the future, my work will remind me to make reasonable arrangements of my time and to make plans in advance. All is for me to make better works and strive for a better self.
After all, even though my assignment this time was just a simple indoor filming, with no aesthetic scene transitions, nor any special editing skills, I still love my work. My work was named “smile!”, which was not only because the smile of our model was particularly beautiful and warm, but also because I wanted to express that the two sets of works made by students majoring designing in our school were full of warmth, and could bring positive energy to people just like the smile. I want to show my appreciations to the designer Cici, my teammate Sherry, and our teacher Christina. I have spent a fun and interesting time during the 12 weeks; with every assignment finished, I found that my interests in filming and editing had grown more and more intense, and every assignment has been a very interesting experience for me. In the future, I will continue to progress and to develop my own advantages, at the same time, I will correct my shortcomings, and learn more knowledge.
