Media 4 – Reflection 28/08/2016

With preparation underway for tomorrows filming and editing as per required as part of our current assessment, things are looks pretty under control. With having half of the filming already completed and the second half of what is left required being much less difficult in terms of changeover times between shots. Editing being the key component moving forward I am looking forward to applying my skills in the editing field to contribute towards this group task.

Media 4 – Reflection 22/08/2016

In today’s class we took a look at understanding the different requirements when setting up a shot, taking particular note on the focal length, depth of field and focus of our shots. We all participated in a class exercise requiring us to adjust focus midshot using a piece of film tape placed onto the focus and marking off the different points of focus in advance meaning that we could adjust focus midshot and know how to ensure the subject in focused at all times even while moving. We were also given a table which will assist us in calculating the requirements for a shot . We learned about how a shorter focal length actually means there is a greater depth of field (ETC. f16) whereas a larger focal length in contrast will mean a shallower depth of field (ETC: f2). I had some prior knowledge about this from past experience with my SLR camera however this is useful information for the future as it provides me with a more indepth understanding of the functions and settings of the camera. This knowledge will be applied when approaching all future assignments this semester.

Media 4 – Observation 21/08/2016

A man stands at a bus stop in the rain. His bus no where to be seen and not expected for a while longer. He stands there enthralled in argument with a co-worker on his phone, either unaware or not caring of the fact that he is getting glares from all sides as people walk by. I stand near him, close enough to hear his vulgar but entertaining commentary but not too close as to alert him of my presence. From the information gathered between swearing, random beastly noises I make out the yarn as a conflict over a past construction job that I assume now to be completed. The irony in this argument is the fact of this mans temper is only worsening his position as from the information gathered off pieces together the responses made by the man, the person on the other side of the phone was not willing to co-operate until the man calmed down.

Filmic potential: Shots from both the receiving side of the conversation of this man taking the phone call and being aggravated, accompanied by other shots from the perspective of the other line of the phone call to provide further context. Using the weather as a means of enhancing mood through lightning and rain to amplify the anger felt by the man.
