film/tv 1 – analysis/reflection week 1 Q.3

1 point from the “narratives” reading that i found interesting was the idea of non-conventional or non-fictional media still utilising traditional story structures such as a 3 act structures or character stereotypes. i had never previously considered news broadcasts or advertisements being able to tell stories using characters so that did open my eyes bit more to a more widespread way of telling stories across different mediums and genres.

the second point form the “narratives” reading was the difference between an “open” and “closed” narrative.  I found this particularly fascinating because I am interested in tv and so being able to see and compare the difference in the characters and structural make up between film and tv has been very beneficial. i had never really noticed such drastic difference  between the story telling methods of cinema and serial tv so i will definitely be taking this into consideration when brainstorming film ideas in the future.

film/tv 1 – analysis/reflection week 1 Q. 2

the most interesting point i found in the lecture was the discussion about all films or stories needing an  event/problem to move them forwards. it just made me try to think if there are any films i could think of where there is no major problem that must be solved by the protagonist. of course, this leads me to realise, if there is no problem that must be over come, then it is pretty much just watching someone I’ve their life with nothing happening and that is boring. thus, a story or film only exists if there is something interesting for the audience to watch and the event/problem creates that interest. the audience wants to see something outside of their everyday boring lives. and the protagonist must be given something to work towards so that thhe film/story can have a conclusion.

i also liked how jasmine showed that it is possible to take mediocre, everyday events and turn them into a major plot event. for example…. walking the dog is not a story event or problem. but if the protagonist is walking the dog and is suddenly abducted by aliens who are about to begin a war on earth then suddenly there is a story because there is a problem that must be faced by the protagonist.

Film-TV 1 refection Q.1

throughout this course i am primarily hoping to improve my writing abilities in relation to stories and ideas for film/tv. this includes becoming more familiar with different aspects of the story such out outlines, synopses, plots, character, events and problems and script writing, and improving on how to combine all these separate elements to create on cohesive and interesting story.

the other goal which i am trying to accomplish is to be able to effectively take these story ideas which i or or my group have created and be able to adapt that to a film that is enjoyable and coherent and in doing so to further enhance my abilities in being a part of the film production process. a major part of this is learning how to work well together collaboratively as a group to explore all possible story ideas and and overcoming intergroup difficulties to be able to produce the best possible film.
