Naomi Simson is one of Australia’s most well-known and successful entrepreneurs. She is the founder of Red Balloon (an online gift-giving service), one out of the five Sharks on Channel 10’s Shark Tank and a successful author. I have admired Naomi since first watching Shark Tank, her intelligence and passion, as well as her no-holds-barred attitude and ruthlessness within the business world is something that has captivated me since first familiarising myself with her.
Naomi has a blog, simply titled NAOMI SIMSON, where she posts great entries on advice for young entrepreneurs, business and innovation ideas, and various insights into the media industry. What I love about this blog is the strong focus on keeping each blog post different from the other, she doesn’t just speak on one topic and one topic only, she keeps her audience refreshed and energised to read each post with different topics and categories. Her constantly changing things means you are staying on one blog, but reading totally different topics – still falling under the umbrella of business and innovation – as to not stray too far away from the general theme of her blog. For example, as Naomi is a wife and mother, if she was to start posting mum tidbits or talking about what type of pasta is best served in the kitchen, I would immediately find this blog to be dis-interesting or not suited towards her current demographic that she has built up. A lot of people are familiar with Naomi through Shark Tank, so for her to post general things about the show, while it is a little dissimilar to her general theme of her blog, it is a welcome change and something that her audience are most likely to be interested in.
I think this approach to her blog works well because there is so much to cover under one umbrella of topics, and the audience constantly is updated on what is going on. As well as this, Naomi only posts entries every 5-10 days, which means she isn’t force-feeding her audience too much information. This wait in time from each entry allows the audience to keep up to date, especially with the pressures of life – it isn’t like she is posting daily or even weekly which, in turn, keeps some suspense for the next entry. There are a lot of blogs out there for people of her nature, mothers and wives who blog daily about the struggles of having this role, or giving out lifestyle tips and motherhood tricks – Naomi is smart to not include this in her blog whatsoever as she knows that isn’t her clientele, or audience, and people would go elsewhere for this sort of content. She has built her audience and to be disloyal like that could result in her losing followers of her established blog.
Naomi describes her blog as her “journey as a small business owner, champion and advocate. I have written more than 1000 posts in this blog in the past decade and my reach extends to 1.5 million people on LinkedIn. Rated by Smart Company second best business blog in 2016, this is a unique collection of insights into start-ups, innovation and the life of an entrepreneur.” The distribution of the blog, through her online presence on LinkedIn as well as her television presence on Shark Tank means that she already has an audience who are familiar with her and is seen as a ‘success story’ because of her brand and persona. Aside from that, her blog is easy to read, it is presented well and is eye-catching. I enjoy reading Naomi’s blog for these reasons and would encourage young entrepreneurs or business people to invest time in reading this invaluable insight into this very strange, confronting and inspiring world!
