Today’s tutorial was all about sound, noise and coverage.
We discussed the 3 main types of sounds which included music, speech and sounds (as well as, unintentional noise). We also spoke about reverb which is created by multiple reflections naturally. For example, if you’re in a church or cathedral, the reverb can be 15 seconds or more. The more reflected surfaces and cabinet spaces can lengthen the sound. This was particularly interesting to me as I understood the exact definition of reverb.
Later on in the tute, Dusty and I, as well as everyone else in the tute, set out with the Zoom H2N to complete a checklist of recordings. We walked around Building 9, through Bowen Street and onto Swanston Street to record things such as silence, conversations, nature and building noises. It was quite a fun activity as we were able to bond with new people while also figuring out our way around new technology that will soon be a part of our everyday life at university. I found using the recorder hard originally, but as the activity went on it became increasingly easier to manoeuvre through the settings of the device! When uploading our files to a computer, we discussed the option of normalising files. Normalising made our files become more harsh and a lot less easy to listen to.
