REFLECTION – WEEK 4

During week 4’s classes we were given an in depth tutorial into sound, and using the directional microphones with the Sony cameras. Robin explained all of the ins and outs of the basic sound capture settings associated with the cameras, some mistakes that are commonly made, and how to make sure everything is sounding as good as possible. I have had some experience with directional mics before however they were completely external, and we did not connect them to the camera, which had it’s downfalls, so knowing we can use these ones while connected to the camera is definitely a positive in my eyes. After our little tutorial I now feel quite confident in how to use a directional without being worried something will be going wrong.

We also completed our Class Exercise #3 this week, which involved a group of us (Lachie, Ramsay, Nathan & myself) reading one of our reflections to each other, then choosing one to shoot a small dialogue of. We chose Nathan’s as his was the most captivating (this may have been a mistake re: Individual Exercise 2), and found a dark, ominous setting within RMIT to shoot a small interview in which he reads his dialogue, and one of us was the “interviewer”, asking him a couple of off the cuff questions about it. I volunteered to be the interviewer and away we went. I’m not entirely sure what the purpose of the exercise was (other than to prompt our work in IE 2), and considering the short period of time we had, we couldn’t really consider an appropriate spot to film, however our spot was fine. As I nominated as the interviewer, I didn’t contribute to the framing and setup of the two shots of Nathan so I can’t comment on that process really, however I would have liked to take part.
