Welcome to the beginning of the Radio Blog series. Just a bit of backgroud – I am a not very good at blogging. I don’t like the idea of pretending what I have to say is interesting to an audience that doesn’t exist. However – what I have done through out the Room With a View course is keep a note book with me for all sessions and take notes. These I am transcribing into my blog entries. I think this is very old school, however it is going to keep me sane.
First class: In the first session of the course I learnt that RWAV was an actual radio show on Triple R. At this point the thought of talking live on radio seemed extremely monumental. I expected high pressure and intensity when speaking on radio. In this session I enjoyed listening to Bruce discuss his experience on radio and what preparations he made before a show. We discussed the difference between “documentary” and “feature”. Documentaries being of factual information, following on a story, often with a distinct voice. Features have creative span and do not need to be linear. We concluded that the difference is journalistic voice. In this session we also covered why people were here in this class, why did people choose RWAV. Through this process I discovered that a lot of people had at least some form of radio experience which I was very surprised about – I didn’t realise just how accessible radio was outside of just what we hear. I said that radio spoke to me because I love that every person has a story, and I believe that radio is a brilliant way to capture those stories. I said that I was looking forward to interviewing people, and gaining and insight into some of these stories.
