Community broadcasters differ a great deal from one to the other. This is because each one is designed to reach a different audience: educational, Indigenous, religious, differently abled, youth, senior or LGBTIQ communities. The largest proportion of community radio stations opperate in regional areas, and all encourage participation from members of the communities they serve.
Each community radio station it united by six principles:
1- Promote harmony and diversity. Contribution to an inclusive, cohesive and culturally diverse Australian commuity. (I recognise here that it means there cannot be anything too offensive, set to put people offside, like something that you might hear on Triple J’s Hack)
2- Decocracy – especially for people and issues not well represented in other media
3- Diversity – in program choices, to expand the variety and viewpoint of the community
4- Independence – from programming, to editorial to management
5- Support local – artists, musicians
6- Encourage participation. This is where it becomes far more than just a radio station.
Educate, inform and entertain.
