Media 5: Reflections/ Epiphanies Wk 2.

I don’t mean to sound like a fanboy…BUT I LOVE FRESH AND ENGAGING FILMS! And I found one last week when I watched Whiplash (2014) Dir. Damian Chazelle made in NYC with a relatively small production budget of $3Mil and shot in a little over three weeks. This film exhibits classic traits of the independent film culture of America and in particularly NYC. The small production budget and only semi-well known cast work incredibly well together here to make a film that stands out in its original concept and style. Director Damian Chazelle was unable to gain funding for his film initially until he won Cannes Film Festival’s award for Short films, which helped him to get funding to fund a feature version. The film has a unique look and feel, unlike any film I have recently seen. The colors, characters, concept and relationships at play are so different they are refreshing. I enjoyed the film in being entertained and captivated but also at what was possible with a short shooting period and small production budget. The only way I could conclude that this film was such a monumental success in my books was one thing. The story. Because after all…story reigns supreme…
