Lecture week 11

In the lecture we discussed about that is the interface designed to force the users attention to follow the certain lines. I like Adrian said this is an invitation for user to explore, I think interface is important to author and the users, it is a tool to connect them, some may consider the users receive the interpretations passively, but I would discuss that it depends on how the users understand the content.

Also, about the multilinear work, I like the discussion that what are the key considerations, They might be sound, clips, or images. And different layers will make different connections. Then, how to create the work? What kind of tool we use, or even the budget will influence the author decisions.

Lecture week 10

In this week lecture, I think it is interesting that discuss about artists do practice again and again on their work, repetition is of the key elements to do the work well and repetition engages contemplation. Also, an artist would be considered as a maker, they make their own decision.

Another point in the lecture I think it excites me that narrative is looking for meaning but not necessary to look for a conclusion or ending or relationships. I think it is pretty right because when we look for something, we always want to find an answer or truth about what we are looking for, but we don’t need to do this every time, a more important thing is what is the meaning of the work, what do we understand about the work and what they want to express, so I like the example that is Kuleshov effect, the same content showing in different time may create different meanings.

Unlecture #10

OMG! It’s week 10 already, I don’t realize that time flies so fast. Anyway, in the lecture, I was really impressed by the website called The Faces of Facebook that was shown by Adrian. It is a very good example of database that we can look for all the faces on Facebook through this website. I’m not sure is this website illegal but it is absolutely amazing to check out all the Facebookers and I tried to find myself or my friends on this site, of course I failed because I browsed it for five minutes and I got nothing. But i would think about the privacy issue when everyone’s Faceboook account is posted on this website and shown publicly. And also the Oracle of Bacon, a small world network looks really interesting and I typed my name up on this site but I got nothing as well, well, I’m not famous?! Okay, That’s what I got this week.

Unlecture #9

In this week’s lecture there is a point that really inspired me and I hope to talk about this in this post. When the lecture is discussing the first question (I don’t really remember what the exact question is), Adrian threw out a point that Melbourne has expended millions every year to try to be a creative city. So I keep thinking about this a for a long time, and I have a lot of questions about this topic. How much is ‘creativity’? I thought creativity doesn’t have a price or priceless, because it is come from our minds (?!) Maybe Australia has expended lot on education but not infrastructure. In my hometown, Hong Kong, is constructing a so-called the biggest cultural district in Asia and expended over billions but it still got nothing. Nowadays publishing our creativities may cost nothing because of network, and the most important point is the idea matters, but not the hardware or even the medium.

Unlecture #8

In this week’s lecture I was really impressed by the question ‘Can video games be considered hypertextual narratives?’ I have never thought of it when I play video games. (I’m not a gamer)

Are video games hyper textual? I think online games can be considered as hypertextual narratives although some people do not think so. Nowadays many online games do have narratives, players need to follow the narratives to play the games, sometimes they can insert the commands in the game to win the game or change the narrative to a different ending.

But, yea, in general many video games do not have narratives and cannot be considered as storytelling. But I think considering video games as hypertextual narratives is arguable.

This week’s lecture is a very inspiring lecture to me. I really like the point that Adrain said we are learning how to make money trough using network. I was impressed that we maybe not going to buy or provide contents but to communicate the contents that users contribute to myself. True that, Like using Facebook, Youtube or even mediafactory, they don’t have any contents but they give us platforms to contribute our contents, the sad thing is, they make money but I don’t.

But now there is new term (not so new) is called youtuber, they use Youtube to release their clips and try to make money, we watch their clips for free but they will get sponsors or paid by some companies, then they make money as well! It sounds like simple but I think it would be hard to be the successful one. So, now, I needa think big, I want to be the next youtuber, instagramer, viner.

It was another amazing lecture since last week. I think Adrian likes to lecture us in different ways in every lecture. This lecture he did not ask us to ask questions and there were some slides on the screen. And, for sure, I did not take any note in the lecture, actually I couldn’t. The lecture was so chill, like a stand up show and Adrian gave us an ad lib lecture. However, I think the lecture was great. As I remember Adrian always said ‘Many people asked me this kind of questions, but I didn’t answer them, but we can talk about this.’ It sounds more like an interaction with us rather than just teach us something. I was really impressed by this because media or network are just like this, we cannot avoid to interact with other people even you don’t know them. Like posting a status update on Facebook, my friends can ‘like’ and comment on my update, even the status doesn’t concern them. So this is a great example that lecturers should not just teach us what they want to talk about but understand what we want to know and wonder.

Also, I think it is also a great idea to let the tutors lecture us in the lecture. Jasmine and Elliot gave us a short lecture to talk about the readings (shame, I haven’t done yet). And Elliot talked about the differences between studying bachelor and TAFE, I think it was very useful to make my mind clear to set goals for the future. I am looking forward to having the lecture next week because I really enjoyed in it. To be honest, I hate taking 5 pages notes in a lecture and I just copy the words on the slides but never listen to the lecture HAHA!

Unlecture #2

It was a very interesting lecture I have ever attended, the way to be taught as very different from the others. In the lecture, there was no slide or clips, but all verbalized. Then, the lecturer did not really prepare at all but passed the question sheet through to let us asked the questions.

I was very impressed that the copyright issues are very important in the network that I have never thought of that. Maybe posting a link up to my own blog is infringing copyrights. And the lecture had pretty much time to cover this topic, I think it is the best part of the lecture to remind me to avoid being sued because of copyright issues.
