Rolling
The first impression of the film was bit abstract. First of all there are few dialogues and most of them are expressed by actions and facial expressions. I think it is the way to be easier in directing the film, it might be hard to handle a pile of dialogues, also it would give more room to edit the film.
Then, I think casting did very well too, the two young girls that they don’t need to have much conversation but just playing together in the park that could illustrate they are good friends in the beginning of the film. Also, the woman crying at the last scene was doing very well also. The camera movement would be the best part of the film in my opinion. The handheld shots and the point of view shots (POV) could make the film become artistic and abstract. Especially the perspective of the girl who is on the roundabout that the best shot in the film. Also, the close up shots of both girls could contribute the atmosphere of the film.
Take Away from Week 3 Reading
In the week 3 reading ‘Sight and Hearing’, there is a point that excites me. It suggests that “if the eye is entirely won, give nothing or almost nothing to the ear. One cannot be at the same time all eye and all ear.” I think it is a really good point because if sometimes the film has too much stimuli (mostly audio and visual) we might not function well on both stimuli and couldn’t concentrate on that particular scene or even the whole film, so should have a balance between eye and ear.
The other point is “image and sound must not support each other, but must work each in turn through a sort of relay.” I think it is a good point as well because I thought sometimes visual element in the film is to complement the inadequacy of story telling by audio element and vice versa. But here suggests that image or sound itself should have enough power on story telling, and each elements are just appear in different time like a relay.
Clown Train
In the film Clown Train, the sound does contribute a lot to the atmosphere. We can hear the sound of the train coming and the brake, even though the screen is still all blacked, but we can imagine there will be a train on screen later. As the atmosphere is going to be creepy, the clown appears on screen and the lights in the carriage are flashing, and the sound of electric current build up the atmosphere to be horror. Also, the laughter of the clown is creepy enough in the conversation. And of course, the sound that illustrates the train is driving away at the credit scene would contribute the atmosphere that is the horror mood is going slightly and implies the story is going to be ended. These sounds would make me to recall the series of SAW, there are many sound effects successfully to build up the creepy and horror atmosphere to scare the audience.
