LOW-FI SELF PORTRAIT
“Produce/generate original media components that might contribute to a creative self-portrait”
I really enjoyed this lax assessment task. Our goal was to produce a total of 7 forms of media, total that gave my audience (in this case, my peers and teachers) a general understanding of who I was. The forms of media that I chose, shown below, I feel, reflect who I am on a pretty general level.
These images presented all represent a different aspect of me.
I have included a landscape shot of Melbourne, taken from a friends balcony, to demonstrate the city which I come from and love. Having travelled a bit, I can definitely say that Melbourne is where I can see a large chunk of my future to be.
A burger and a fun little illustration of me. This was taken in a food court in Ascot Vale. I love fast food and the culture that surrounds it.
I’ve included a photo that I captured while I was watching a VICE documentary on ISIS. I learn a lot from documentaries, they’re definitely one of my favourite forms of screen media. This ISIS doco was really hard hitting, definitely recommended viewing – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUjHb4C7b94.
This final photo was taken on my walk home from the station. Having a bit of a photographic background, i’ve always walked past this house and thought everything about it was just right aesthetically. My mind always does circles when I walk past it, and the sky behind it was perfect in comparison with the olive nature of the building and the green foliage surrounding it.
This is a video of me hearing Ariana Grande’s ‘Problem’ at the club. I love pop music and I love havin’ a fun time. I get made fun of getting a kick out of trashy top 40 pop but I love it.
A video of one of my best mates, Vincent. He’s an ex-stray and has FIV, which is basically the cat equivalent of HIV. He does nothing particular interesting in his actions but he’s a really great dude and has heaps of personality. His eyes tell a million tales. I love cats.
This little sound bite documents my journey on the Craigieburn line essentially everyday. I consume a lot of information on the train and spend a lot of my life pondering on it.
This final sound bite is from when I travelled to the UK. I love travelling and all of the humorous moments that come from it. Best train announcement ever. Travelling really develops your confidence and I think i’d be a totally different person if I hadn’t of travelled.
With this self portrait assignment, I was trying to achieve a balanced and level-headed look at the person that I am from the eyes of any outsider. It was a lot more challenging than I initially thought as I always struggle to relate the person that know I am to others.
I’ll leave you with one of my favourite quotes from my favourite fiction series of all time, Harry Potter.
“Dark times lie ahead of us, and there will be a time where we must choose between what is easy, and what is right”.
