Week 5 – Lectorial
‘pre existing film footage appropriated by a filmmaker and used in a way that was not originally intended’
– See A.Kuhn and G.Westwell, A Dictionary Of Film Studies (2012)
It’s really funny because before starting this Media course I never really gave a second thought to how much found footage is used everyday on television. Even just watching the news, I guess most of the stuff is found footage and credited to other media agencies. Just the thought of how much paperwork is needed to follow up the copyright issues is enough to give me the hot sweats.
In my project brief 2, a friend of mine can be heard in the background singing Queen’s smash hit “Fat Bottom Girls”. I didn’t record this thinking it would be copyrighted material, but alas, was told to take it down in fear of breaching copyright law. Just goes to show how serious the laws are in protecting the creative rights of individuals, which is 100% a good thing IMO. Amazing work guys.
