Can I Have Your Attention Please?

‘Can I Have Your Attention Please’ is an audio piece that I recorded with Molly based on youth’s attention to their media devices. Essentially, we were asked to make this piece in our week 11 workshop in order to practice working with others to create an audio segment, like we’re required to do for Project Brief 4 (PB4).

This exercise was very, very useful in understanding how to use Adobe Audition for editing our audio segments. Even though I’ve edited audio before, I was yet to use this program to do so, but it provided effective and greater ways of editing. While editing, it was interesting to take Klya Brettle’s lecture and tips into consideration, while creating my own editing style for audio. Learning how to use Audition also gave a lot of context to what Brettle was discussing in her lecture.

Similarly to what my group and I have decided to do for PB4, Molly and I incorporated social media sounds into ‘Can I Have Your Attention Please’. Doing this really assisted in testing out different ways in which my group and I could record and layer these social-media-like sounds effectively for my final project.

It also helped to work with someone in creating an audio piece, so that I could understand how it would be done when actually completing PB4. Molly and I worked together to create questions, sound effects and the overall structure of the audio piece. As we edited our own separately, we did not have to worry about creative differences – though I still do believe that this is something that needs to be thought of and dealt with when creating a major project with other people.

I’ve experienced it once, and I’ll experience it again: background noise. As usual, there was some form of background noise to make editing difficult and the quality lessen. Though this was filmed inside, you can still hear a light buzzing or rumble in the background. I’ve decided that future audio needs to be recorded in sound-proof rooms, with no slight background noise whatsoever. This will make layering and texturing in PB4 and other audio pieces simpler and have a better effect on the overall piece.

This workshop/exercise assisted in my learning of the basics of Abobe Audition, which was greatly desired and needed – especially in the media/communications industry. Though, I still believe that I’ll need to work on understanding how to use this program thoroughly and skilfully so that my group and I can execute our idea for Project Brief 4 to the fullest of its potential.
