Overcoming Fears and Stuff: a.k.a. another week 7 initiative blog

So I missed a screening for one of my classes this week based off one of my major fears: birds.

Due to multiple traumatic experiences as a child, I decided NOT to watch the film The Birds* (1963), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, on the big screen. Although my fear of birds attacking me to death wasn’t necessarily the only reason that made me not go to this screening, it sure made the decision easier. BUT it did make the guilt pile up after not going.

Why? Because I let a fear get in the way of doing my university work.

I was even having a discussion with a friend the other day how stupid it is to let your fears get in the way of doing something that will benefit you, i.e. showing your work/film to a group of people. I’ve refused showing my work in front of classes or friends many times because I was fearful of their reactions. If not pushed to the limits and overcame, this is a terrible trait to have.

Essentially what this initiative post is attempting to say is to do things even though you may fear it. If it’s going to benefit you in the long run, the anxiety you may feel in that short period of time means nothing. Particularly with showing your pieces of work, it helps the process of gaining feedback and bettering yourself. #deep
