Exploiting Your Privacy for Advertising: Is It Okay?

To continue with week 6’s topic of Privacy:

Facebook is so damn smart at exploiting yours.

After having looked at online clothing stores as ASOS or whatnot, – and let’s be real: with the student discount it’s generally ASOS – I always notice the pieces that I’ve JUST looked at (but decided I could not afford) appear on my Facebook feed. Yes, thank you Facebook for the reminder that I’m broke and sad.

But in all honesty, Facebook is going through my tabs and teaming up with these sites to try convince me to re-think about it. Though I may find this very frustrating, as their little mind games almost always work on me, it is clearly a very smart way of advertising. So, do I have the right to really be that fustrated?

Facebook is basically exploiting my privacy and what I’m looking at on other tabs to find ways to communicate to me. Is this so wrong? Not really. In this day and age, websites need to get smart and creative in ways to make money on something that we’re using for ‘free’, and technically we’re just outright giving it to them.

Want privacy? Open an ‘Incognito Window’ on Google Chrome or something.

Though very obvious and a little exploiting, the way Facebook uses this information is very reasonable in ways to make money for themselves. This transparent technique is both appreciated by the audience and influential. This technique can be taken, altered and used by other Media platforms to make money for their ‘free’ content.
