The film I have chosen to break down its lighting composition is Martin Scorsese’s 2010 mystery/thriller Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. This particular scene is a conversation in a cave between two mental patients. The scene is lit by natural, ambient lighting in the form of a wood fire. It is poitioned in the middle of the room on the ground with the two subjects facing eachother on either side. The fire acts as the key light and is directionally cast directly onto the front of the subjects, limiting shadows cast across face. The flame provides soft lighting with a relatively low foot candle measure, making it more flattering of DiCaprios face. There is no apparent fill or backlighting which creates a dark emptiness around the illuminated subjects. There is slight but very minimal bounce light off the rock walls . A warm colour temperature is emitted by hot flame, bringing out the distressed and bloodshot nature of DiCaprios eyes.
