Finally I managed to finish editing the short film that I have been working on it for a few days.

I was worry with filling up the missing part between each scene, but I could manage to add transition effect on them and all the scenes can go flow. When I added the transition effect on each scene, the story behind the short film that I am making can be clearly viewed.

When I reach final step of editing this film, I feel quite happy with all the effort that I have been putting on making this short film. However, there are a lot of improvement needs to be make in the future. There are some scenes that are too bright or over exposure.

I was having difficulties in editing this short film, but the over all result is quite satisfying.

Lonely Day

Lonely Day is the title that I choose for the short film that I am making. In this short film I am trying different shots, which focusing on a guy who are being lonely while walking around the city.

I was planning to shot a horror film, but the timing was not perfect for that. Therefore I decided to change my plan and shot something else. I was not write anything about this short film that I am making, which I call “Lonely Day”, but the ideas just occur in my head once I went into the class and everyone started to talked about their ideas.

I explained my ideas to my friends who I was going to work with, and they all were happy to work with me on that day. We went out to Swanston St, and started to take the first try out shot. After the first try out shot I realized that there are some improvement that need to be done, so I took another shot and it went pretty well.

I took several footages, which I could use to finalize the film, and I was pretty confidence on those footages that I was collecting. Everything seems pretty good till I went into the edit room.

When I am doing the editing, I found out a lot of missing parts, which needed to be fixed. The story line is fine for me, but there are some gaps between each scene. Those scenes are connected, but they are not going in a flow, which makes the film does not look nice.

After I found out that problem, I am starting to make a plan, in order to fix it. I might add a sound track on this film or call the actor and take some additional footage to fill up the gap.

In 1956 Peter Watkins released his first film that called “The Web”. With limitation of equipment that he had, he could create quite good film for people to watch.

When I was watching “The War Game” and “Punishment Park” in the second tutorial of week four. I realize that making a good film does not really require very good equipment, but it does require great ideas and good plan. As I can notice in Peter Watkins’ film “The War Game” that was released in 1965, there must be a deep research that he has done before he started making the film. The film shows the side effect of the nuclear bomb on the society, which makes it looks quite realistic.

According to Peter Watkins’ website, the film “The War Game” was shot in amateur way with limited equipment that they had. The film was shot in four different towns, such as; Kent towns of Tonsbridge, Gravesend, Chatham and Dover. According to the website, the firestorm scene was taken in an abandon military barrack in Dover.

Furthermore, in Peter Watkins website also stated that, the cast of the film “The War Game” was made of the amateurs. The team picked the actors through out the process of making the film in Kent. The cast was done just a month before the film was actually made. In addition, the team did not have as good equipment as we got today, in order to make this film.

The question is; why is this film become so special? Well, according to Peter Watkins website, his film “ The War Game” was so controversial and it was banned from the public Television in 1965. Even the BBC violated their own charter of independence, because of this film. In addition, the banning of this film goes on for more than twenty years, due to the pressure of the government.

Another question comes to my mind, why did the government put pressure on the national television, in order to ban the film “The War Game”? Well, I believe that this film play really important role in affecting the society’s point of view toward the nuclear war, especially the film was released during the period of cold war. Even though, the film is a fiction film, but the set of the film was set in documentary style.

With the documentary style that this film has, make this film looks more realistic and can be trusted by the society. When I watched this film in the second tutorial of week four, I did not realize that I was watching a fiction film. I thought that, I was watching documentary film.

I was not in the first week class, so I have missed some of the exercise that going on in the first week. I have heard from my classmates and also my tutor that I have missed the sound recording exercise.

When I started my first class in the second week, I learn how to set up the camera and I join a group of three students to go out and make a video with no sound. I also need to make a video with no sound by self. There were several similar exercises going on in the second week and also third week. Besides in the class we were watching an abstract video that was made by Hillary Harris, and learn how to operate audio mixer.

From all those exercises that I have done in and outside of the class, I have discovered several things that motivate me to go out and make a video about something that I am interested in. When I was watching Hillary Harris’s abstract video, I realize that making video is simple, and it is able to convey meaningful messages to the audiences. Moreover, it can also change the way people view something.

When I put my hand on the camera and collaborate with my team to go out and shot something. I realize that making a film is not as easy as I though; in order to make a film we need to have a well plan and also good concept. In addition, good teamwork is also required.

When we did a writing exercise in the first class of the week three, I found out that, through a simple writing we can make a really good film. That exercise was really fun and it also helps me to express my idea on a piece of white paper, before I put it on practice. From this exercise I also realize that filmmaking is not always rely on the script writing, because we can always start with writing that tells story.
