In week 10, we all had to book a consultation time with James to talk about our project further, thus I booked in for 10:30, which is our studio times. I came a bit late and walked in quite nervously, as I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I didn’t prepare much, aside from my rough script. I had a hard time deciding who the “door” voice is going to be. I did envisioned it to be a sister for my pitch, but as I was writing the script, I made the character her dead mother. After writing some dialogues, I had another change of mind and decided to go with her sister. But then I had another question. Should her sister be dead or alive? I then consulted with my sister as she is quite the creative brains sometimes, and finally set on making her dead by suicide. I also came up with their names, Elena for the girl and Rachel for her sister.
James had a read of my script and thankfully he thought it was good. He also gave some feedback which was helpful. In the opening part of the script, I wrote : “The floors are littered with tissues and cans.” and he suggested to make it clean instead, because apparently people tidy up before commit a suicide (interesting). For the dialogue, he also suggested to keep it short and simple for the “door” aka Rachel, and more descriptive and suggestive for Elena. Regarding the ending, I’ll not have Rachel commit suicide, nor decided to not, rather I’ll end the film before she decides.
Aside from discussing the script, we also talked about the audio. Since sound in this film is important, he suggested to do an extra recording of Rachel’s lines so I’ll be able to work with more materials. He told me I could either have the actress who’s playing Rachel wear a lapel mic, or have someone hold a boom mic on top of her, which I haven’t really decided on. I also asked him whether to shoot at night or in the afternoon, and we agreed that night suits the script better. He further asked me to watch a movie and actually write out the dialogues as a part of my research. And that’s basically the end of our discussion!
I really hope I’ll do well with the script, which I’ll update you guys on.
