Now that assessment two is out of the way, this means it’s time to prepare for the next one.
Our third assessment is being brought to another level and now we have to create a short film. Like before, this is a group project. I’m in the same team with Pavina and Lyreca, only Pat has joined another.
At first it was a bit hard to decide what to do, which is pretty normal. We had so many ideas and we’re just writing them all down on Pavina’s note, while trying to find some inspirations online by watching videos on Youtube. Fortunately, we’re able to settle on a concept and presented it the week after (week 5).
Our concept for the film is “boy meets girl”. It was a more refined version of my individual pitch, where my idea was a guy and a girl would meet in a cafe or such and will slowly show interest to each other through their body language. The idea was to capture these small emotions and tension between the two for the viewers to enjoy and relate to.
For our presentation, we explained our rough concept. What this is: our movie will have no dialogue, or even if there will be, it will be really minimum. Our focus was to capture emotions, and make the film a great visual experience. Thus, we listed some potential locations such as gardens or the yarra river where we’ll be making use of the natural lighting (Golden Hour), and also China Town where we’ll make use of artificial lights. At this stage, we have yet decided on the actors and shooting schedule. Lastly, we decided that our roles will all be distributed evenly between the three of us, meaning we’ll all have a go at directing, scripting and editing.
Regarding our inspiration, we were inspired by mostly Asian movies. Aesthetically, we were inspired by the dark alleyway scene from “In The Mood For Love” (below), as well as the concept of the two characters meeting. Another source of inspiration will be the ending scene form “Your Name” aka “Kimi no Na wa”, where the boy and girl crosses each other and then turns around. (below)
We also had a chat after school to come up with a plot based on our concept. At the end, Lyreca wrote out our agreed plot, as shown below.
All in all, this week was pretty productive as we have already had a concept and plot. By next week, we hope to finalise the actors, location as well as a more specific script, along with our shooting schedule.
