It’s finally the last week of the semester, and that means yesterday was the last class for Food on Film Studio. We do have an exhibition going on next Tuesday which I’m pretty excited about.
After watching the rough cut, Kim gave some feedback on my piece. She suggested for me to still cut down her talking, and put some little sequences between each topic, which I agree with especially that one part where she talked for quite some time. She also mentioned that I should fix some shaky footage as well as do colour correcting for some shots. So after all the modifications, I have to say I’m satisfied with how the final product.
Nonetheless, reflecting on my own work, the whole experience from planning to actually finishing the product has been unforgettable. With The Inconvenience Store, I wanted to tackle issue on food waste which was my topic of interest from the start of the semester. Thus I’m really thankful that I’m given an opportunity to actually make a film on a supermarket which strives to help solve that problem. I hope that through this movie, the store itself will gain more awareness and more importantly the topic of food waste itself. Not only that, I hope that this movie will touch people heart but also be engaged in the visual experience of watching.
I don’t think there’s one most successful element in my film, because I think every elements compliment one another and working together to create the final product which I’d consider a success. That includes the planning of the shoot, the beautiful shots of the place, Dayle’s unique character and her great answers, to the lengthy editing that puts all the pieces together into one coherent piece.
If I were to be given another chance to do this project differently, I’d do two things. Firstly, as much as I love the freedom of working alone, I would love to work with other people because it’d be nice to spread the workload and receive help in the areas where I’m not very good at. I would also invested more time learning about audio recording equipment because the audio for this film wasn’t the best, partly because the place is really loud but also because I only had lapel mic with me and I wasn’t 100% sure I operated it correctly.
Lastly, I learned a lot of things from making this film. Regarding the topic on food waste, it’s amazing to know that there are communities like them that are passionate in helping reduce this issue by actually doing something. Thanks to this project, I also went out of my comfort zone which in result had me meet and do things I wouldn’t have done otherwise. As a part of the interview requirements, I volunteered for the store and it was such a lovely experience and I just met so many people, and experienced such a different environment than of what I’m used to. Travelling outside of the city to the store, conducting an interview alone, struggling with audio editing, were a few challenges I had but it was such a great experience.
The whole journey of creating this film has been an unforgettable one, and I’m happy to say that I’m proud with the final product.
