pitching film project 2

Assignment 3 is due this Friday, and yet we are already on the roll to the next one. Phew.

Similar to assignment 3, assignment 4 is making another movie (yay). Of course, our first step is to pitch our idea to the class. Similar to the previous pitch, this is an individual presentation, so we had to research and put the pitch ourselves.

So my pitch for film project 2 today is basically inspired by two short movies that I found online.

The first one is about a girl trying to attempt suicide, when finally deciding not to at the end.

What inspired me from this short film is the concept of suicide itself, which I find an interesting topic to dive into. I also like the aesthetics of the film itself, the film-like colour, and the aesthetics shots.

And my second inspiration, which is probably what my pitch leans more to, is a video by Vogue starring Dakota Johnson.

I really liked the idea of Dakota talking to the “mysterious guy” who is behind the door. In my pitch I talked about how I want my film to exactly be like that, showing the main character, while only being able to hear the other character.

Therefore, the concept of this movie will be the combination of my inspiration from each of the short film mentioned above.

  • a female protagonist attempts a suicide
  • her sister will be on the other side of the door, unseen, in the form of a ‘voice’.
  • focuses on the dialogues between two characters, and the tone/emotions

The plot in summary would be:

  • A girl wants to attempt a suicide in her room by consuming drugs.
  • Messages her sister to notify her.
  • Her sister arrives while the girl is still contemplating.
  • Conversation between the two.
  • At the end, the girl decides to live

As you can see, my idea is pretty simple. There will only be two characters, one seen and one not. Therefore, the audience can only see the protagonist and hear the sister’s voice, so the sister can be a mysterious figure, giving some freedom for the audience to use their imagination. I am not too fret about the genders of the characters to be honest, although I am leaning towards two sisters as the dialogues can be pretty intimate.

For the setting, I’m thinking of a simple room. The main point is the action will occur somewhere near the door, so the dialogue can occur naturally. I do want the cinematography to be nice, but that’s honestly not my focus, because beautiful visuals have been our main focus.

Rather, I’d like to focus more on the dialogue aka scripting because that will make up a big part of the film. I haven’t decided what it’s going to be, because I’m pretty flexible with feedback I’ll be getting if I’m to work in a group (which is most likely to happen). But for now, my basic idea would be the sister talking about their childhood together, and her sister just pouring all her hidden love in words. I’m thinking of really strong and punching lines because we need it for the protagonist to actually change her mind.

And that’s basically it. We’ll be sorting out the groups tomorrow and hopefully everything works out.
