Assignment 4 Reflecting on my semester

I was remember the first class exercise that we grab the camera to shot outside. We shot the subject that we choose and then bring it back to share in the class. These things are constantly emerging in my mind. It seems happened yesterday. The summer course is coming to the end. At the beginning of the class, everyone have to make a small goal which could encourage us to try hard to achieve it. I made a small goal in that time that is learn more film techniques and have a strong ability to make a small movie. Honestly, I have learned how to use the camera, how to setting correctly in the daytime. To seeing the real documentary process from the begin to the end. From the class exercise, I realised the documentary is not a easy work. We spent the half day to finish class exercise that includes the shooting and editing and then we get one minute length video. Obviously, if we make a documentary it would be take long time or more. In addition, the documentary should have a rigorous logical thinking and rich video content, which requires a lot of communication and conversation skills. In the final project, we made a video to present the difference between the city and the suburb. I think the technique is good, I used the editing software for 5 years, so the basic operating is easy for me but the big challenge that is communication. We have interviewed two people, but the result did not meet my expectation. In terms of the video, because we don’t have the voice-over to explain what the video is, so we turn to another plan to record the real voice matching the video, which could replace the voice-over to present the video concept clearly. Go through the class exercises and project, I have a new realise to the documentary, which gives me a new view to see the world, to notice around us. From the final project, I have found my weakness and strength. I am very interested in photo and video production, but this is not enough. I need to practice the content of the video, try to tell the story, and exercise the ability to communicate with people. Overall, we are happy to experience this process, good communication and collaboration. It is our pride to be able to make this video.

Assignment 4 Appraising my final work

Our media work aim to people who living in the Melbourne city, because the Melbourne city has become more and more population in the recent year. People have to squeeze in the same tram before they go working. As the population growing up quickly, people don’t have enough places to live, there are some unsafe things happen in sometime. The beauty of Melbourne’s past has also dimmed, people working in a smelly environment, living in a conuctrustion noise. It is time to go outside to take fresh air, enjoy some good places they haven’t ever been before. Our intension of this media work is persuade people to take their time to see how the beauty suburb around them. Honestly, I am happy to finish this work. Compare to this final video, I would like to enjoy the process of video making. I have learned professional knowledge of each framing, also I found my weakness and my bad habits that I have existed all time. If I can’t find these, I can’t complete the final work. For the final cut, I think we achieve it, we make a clear structure to present our idea. For me, I am proud of my image shooting. I have been taking camera for 5 years, and playing drone almost 1 year. In terms of the camera, I am confident to take a great picture. I could say I have the ability of identity beauty of pictures. As a media student, I think everyone should learn the aesthetic whenever taking pictures or filming. It is the basic ability to construct the image in my eye then present to the public. In addition, I think I made good editing techniques, I have learned some new skills when I go through whole processes, especially the rhythm. In my initial thinking, the rhythm has no connection with the editing, I was wrong when I get into it. A great editing has huge impact on the rhythm so that make the video more colourful. I have to practice more about it, and the transition is still an important part in a video making.

Assignment 4 collaboration

Actually, the issues are always coming in the making of our project. At the beginning, we just hang out to take much more shots to be able to edit. However, there are most shots that I couldn’t use in the edit suite because I take too many same shot type, I would not like to use same shot type in a video. It looks so boring. Even I know I should take multiple shot type before editing, I still make the mistake. After the consultation, I found my bad habit by Rohan’s suggestion. When I was filming, I should take a long time shot rather than moving camera to focus on other subjects. Shooting a long time to see more details. Our work has more about the Melbourne scene, so we can’t get up late to shot. So we make a new routine for us, stay up early and get up early in order to shoot a great scene. In terms of the video editing, Rohan helps me a lot. He gaves me a lot of suggestions about the rhythm and some good idea of each scene framing. In my first editing, it was terrible, I don’t have a clear structure in my head and even haven’t think about the rhythm. I know it, but all things come into my head make me mess. When Rohan told me a good start and I was trying to do it. Everything was slowly clear, I know what I am going to do step by step. The most difficult thing for me is the negotiation, the documentary is about communicate with people to learn or inquire something in a story. Our topic is easy, we are able to ask for passing by some question. Unfortunately, we are not good guider to let them take easy in front of the camera. That is why we don’t add interview into our video in the final cut. I think we should practice more our communicate skills, to do it better if we have next interview work.

Assignment 4 Two seperate edits of a sequence of your work

In the draft cut, we know our video trying to portrait the crowded city and quiet suburb to make a big contrast to see the big difference in these two spots. However, it looks so mess that is not clearly to point out the central of the video. I was getting many shots like a wide shot tilt down to the street and focus on the people, focus on background turn to the foreground to see huge people passing on the street. If I watch back each shots, it was good. If these shots put it together to make a video, it is not good enough. Because we do not interview anyone even voice-over. The only way to express clearly our central point is using the image and frame to make the audience easily understand. Furthermore, I haven’t thinking about the sequence order. I guess this is the reason that caused this video looks so mess. In terms of some shots in suburb, I think the editing and some shots have the same problems as the city part. It is not gives audience a kind of peace because I just used a lot of drone shots with the beautiful scene. The sequence should be mixed different shot types comes to emotional transition and visual transition. In the final cut, we are concentrate on this issues to make some changes. First, we have refilm and taken some new shots in the new location. Also, we have added close-up shot and record some natural voice to make up for the lack of image. Then, we have consider the rhythm, how to pick one scene for the introduction, and how to pick the next scene to match the previous one. As this video aims to see how the city busy is, how the suburb quiet is, so it has too much wide shots. Let the audience to see the wide shot is a best way to breifly understand this video’ purpose. Using multiple shot types would make the video varied, also we have recorded the voice in that moment and mixed the video together. I think the strength of the work is the rhythm, there is no voice-over, but we use the music and voice that we recorded to enhance the central point. On the other hand, the weakness comes from the strength, we don’t have voice-over to strengthen video content.

Assignment 2- Reflection for video

This video production is like the exercise that we did in the last week class. I would like to try something new in this time, last time I just make shot order that I think correctly, but this time I would create a new sequence to convey my minds to the video. First of all, it is a wide range shot to introduce the background of all scenes, that is a fountain in the front of a beautiful building. Then we could see more information with a tilt down shot. In the opening sequence, it looks a really peaceful garden, people and animals keep a friendly relation, but there is a little bit noise after we seeing people entertainment. The sound from the background is in various ways, like the people’s talking, truck noise, helicopter and building construction. People like to seat in the garden to enjoy this peace environment, but they are noise maker as well. We are looking for some quiet places also we are creating noise. Apparently, this video is just a simple video to present the noise and the peace and the relationship between the people and the environment. In terms of the rhythm, I think it is slow at the first, then go fast with the shot change, like the wide range shot transits to the medium shot, then goes to close up. It gives audience time to let them consider. At the end, the image is a extremely close-up, which gives audience a kind of pressure to think about something. If I watch it again, I would recognise this place is located in city because I could hear too much different voice from the background and most of is human made it.

Module 2A photography

The topic of our group is the escalator. We think the escalator is the connection sign of two spots also it could be seen as the special spot in every shopping market or high buildings. We went to 5 places to capture the escalator, and we try to capture it with different angles and framing to make it variety. I really like this picture which taken in the Melbourne central, the way on the third floor to the Emporium. I was thinking to capture the photo from the top to bottom and try best including more information in a shoot. I have used the cannon DLSR, so I could say I am familiar with the camera, I never waste much more time for the setting up. What I concern about is the framing, I would like to make it more aesthetic and professional. Because of the top of the building ceiling was too bright, so I make the camera shoot down to the escalator to block the top lighting into the lens. And the picture looks more depth because it includes the first floor and the second floor. The more thing I noticed that is the texture. The escalator looks sharp that is I have never noticed before. And I noticed the floor image, the white and black pattern, has mixed randomly. There are two interesting things that I have found, one of is the mirror which reflects the light and images. Another is the light and shadow, there is different light colour in the store, if the light through the barriers, it would make shadow around the floor, and the different colour would affect the colour temperature, some of would be warm, some of would be cold.

Photo essay

You never know what will happen in the next second, surprise or disaster. Last week I made an appointment with a doctor to check my fingers, make sure I took wallet and mobile phone and I went out. The weather is still freeze cold and I have stepped up. However, when I got to Swanston street to get on the tram, I found it a bit strange. Why did the noise constantly appear in the sky, and when I looked up, I found two helicopters. I wonder in my head. Is it what happened? After waiting for 10 minutes, there is still no tram. I looked up at the electronic sign and found a notice that was forbidden in the front. It was when I realized that there might have been an accident, but I still don’t know what the accident was. Car accident? Congestion? Or a parade? I started to move forward and found that there were more and more people in front of them. They looked a little nervous and I felt that it might be a bad thing. So I stepped up and wanted to know what happened in front of me. When I got to Chinatown, it was already at the end of the road. Many police and vehicles are guarded here to prevent people from entering. At this time, I heard people around me say that there was a terrorist attack and caused casualties. Unfortunately, the criminals have been arrested. The yellow word on the street sign shows: No trams are allowed. There was also a cordon around the road, and people were very curious about the situation. They picked up the phone and filmed it. But I still have to go to the hospital, I can only go to another road, it may take more time. Because the incident occurred on Bourke street, the entire street was blocked, traffic was getting crowded, and there were many pedestrians on the road. On the other side, I saw journalists who are reporting the incident. After that, I heard the voice of the ambulance. I guess there must have been a bloodshed. My conjecture has also been verified. In the news report, I saw two innocent people being hurt. I looked at my watch and it was time for the appointment. I turned and ran to the hospital.

Real to Reel Blog Post 3 – Reflection for ‘F For Fake’

This film is a pure documentary and has a high artistic value. The film is based on the artistic forger Elymr and re-evaluates the artistry and authenticity. Orson Welles is the director and the protagonist. In the opening sequence, he assured the audience that what we saw for a whole hour would be true, mainly the story of Elmyr and the biographer Irving. All the stories are completely correct, but their stories are used as a monologue and an explanation for the purpose of paving the narrative after the Welles narratives.

The film is combined with clips and mismatched shots, creating a disorganized viewing experience. But this forces the viewer to pay close attention to the narrative and audio in the movie, and can’t miss any details. We can see each of them has different account of what happened in themselves and what they thinking about. Welles didn’t draw a conclusion, he transfers the right to the audience. The audience would be a natural way to recognize the whole things and analysing what is true, who is lying.

I think this film gives me a new cognition to documentary and human weakness. The documentary is not just to record the real things, also it could create a new one to make it complicated so that we could see clearly the bunch of lies and their thoughts in their deep down. Go through the whole film, I can’t say this follow coherent narrative because it combines a series of historical events, interviewing and Welles’s footage, all of it make it dramatic. Besides it, I have to say I love the charm of the documentary character. That is the real life that real people made it. When we watch the film, we have known each of character what they are. Elmyr don’t believe the inspector, their work doesn’t make sense. He believes if his work hangs in the gallery, it would be real because it does make same value compare to the original one. Think about his background, we would infer he doesn’t satisfied with the current life, he has ambitions and jealousy. Everyone stands in their own way to defend themselves. We do not just know the beginning and the end of the story, also we do clearly see everyone’ darkness in their heart.
