A brand new semester has finally started. Now we’ve come back to the time of a year when we all hope for the best to start afresh. I’ve decided to do just that. Isn’t it weird that many think of that? It’s almost like an obsessive ritual for us to celebrate New Year or any “special day”, like, birthdays. New Year isn’t actually a “new” year. It’s just a new cycle for the Earth to orbit. Conclusion. It certainly does not mean a fresh start. The “fresh start” usually happens now, at this very moment, when your ideas just altered; and when you start to take actual actions.

I am now liking this studio already after the first class. The title also shares the idea of “noticing” to the one I did last year: translating observation. During the first class, Adrian touches on a few subjects I found extremely interesting: how we describe the world using the spoken language, the linguistics, agency, materialism, linear stories and non-linear mode of making media. Most of those topics are all worthy to be explored not only in this studio but in life. I’ve always thought that the language itself, even though it can express ourselves comparably clear, is, in many cases, also misleading. We say things we don’t mean; we play with the words like the lawyers, trying to find a flaw in evidences or between the lines of articles of law. That’s why I love artists. They find their own ways to communicate; and, those outputs usually are very sincere, if they are real artists. I find La La Land quite sincere. All the allusions to old musicals; all the colors and the simplest theme of dream coming true. I find Keaton Henson‘s songs moving; and also, Monet and his Water Lillies: he eventually purchased his own garden for painting in his late years.

Adrian also mentioned what we, as students, need to do in university. It is a place for study, but the purpose for us to study here has changed. No objective, no progress. I am glad that Adrian brought this up because I’ve been a bit lost for year one and I am still in search of an approach to study effectively here. As a second language learner, I have no clue how things work around here. Sometimes I find myself learning not so much, therefore I want to know how to gain more from the uni (except for going to libraries).

“What is a story? ” A good question to ask during the class since we are doing documentaries. I think it’s the things that happened or are imagined to have happened. There’s always a time limit or, duration. A true story is a unit of history; history is a part of time. So traditionally, most movies and documentaries are stories; and now, I think it’s time to explore to tell history.
