Guest lecturer Paul Richard has been telling us about the work attachment we need to do for our degree(which is not called “work experience” or “internship”). So, for the attachment to be valid, we must have followed this:
- To be supervised by a media professional during the work
- Speak to the career officers before you begin your attachment
- A minimum of 80h by the end of Media 6
- A 1500 words report/reflection
- Must finish work attachment for graduation
I like this idea of work attachment because it provides me with the beginnings of a professional network. This reminds me that really, in two years and a half, I will be working at a media company doing whatever job that is necessary for my growth. Everything is happening so quickly. Maybe I shall get myself a decent business card and design it myself right now to look more professional (which won’t hide the fact that I am inexperienced. But doing the first step of making myself look good is one important start.). And I’m also thinking that I may even do this work attachment thing in a different country which will be more challenging and interesting for me.

Media technologies development is a huge factor in changing our world towards a more convergence culture. Theories that judge the impact of media technology varies. On one hand, there’s the “technology determinism” which argues that it is the technology that is shaping our society; on the other, it is said that technology is emerged from the certain context for certain purpose and it is a two-way influence between the two. I personal don’t quite agree with technology determines our development, rather, of course it is one of the most important factor, but I see it as an incentive which helps and accelerates the evolvement of human societies. It is like the effect of a catalyst which is added in a chemical experiment.
Debates over theories on media technologies are still continuing, so let’s just see what academics have to say in further discussions.
