Shandon Film and TV Group, in other word, a film and TV production company in China has been really popular in mainland China recently. Their latest production, Ode to Joy, has been the top one topic search on Weibo for weeks. Almost all of my Chinese friends has been talking about it. I finished the season in two days because I think it is somewhat phoney in some ways and the character’s personalities are too distinct too be real. However, the five female characters are actually typical in representing five types of girls we can find in Shanghai, China. Some come from small cities, trying to make a living in Shanghai; some are educated abroad and become successful women; some are the quiet, nice girls who just come out of universities; some are rich, posh girls who do not give a care of the world. Another production, Nirvana In Fire, is, in my opinion, is much better than Ode to Joy. Although the special effects in the first episode is highly unprofessional, overall, the shots, the story and the acting are great compared to other Chinese TV shows.
