Don’t know for what reason, the internet was down for a while early during this week’s workshop; so we spent some time editing our self-portrait videos.

During this week’s workshop, Seth went over the criteria for project two and clarified some issues about copyright music. I feel it a bit challenging now that I have to try to compose on my own. Videos and photos are no problems for me, but music, I only know how to play the piano. But it’s a good practise. I love strange and difficult tasks for me so that I can improve myself.

We were shown a previous self-portrait video by Bliss David. I actually quite like the video. A record of a phone dialogue is played throughout the video, quite creative. The clip really builds a sense of unity which I also want to achieve in my video. I haven’t finished mine, but I’m finding it not continuous enough in some parts. Hopefully I can change the situation. Also, I find the editor a “non-conformist”. The video is quite different from the one we usually watch. The shots are not displayed as a whole, but parts of the shots with really short edits. Thus, the video is compressed so that the pace is quite perfect. Overall, it’s quite original and stylistic.

I always thought that expressing “the self” is a quite difficult thing to do. It’s like trying to answer one of the hardest question in philosophy: “who am I?” I think I really know too little of myself to really demonstrate things about me in videos. But I suppose that’s the beauty of life.

That’s all for the week. 🙂
