What you learn about yourself (and the way you learn) is almost more important then what you actually learn. Time and time again I have been told I’m too nit-picky, I’m a perfectionist, I’m too hard on myself. I know this holds me back – but sometimes it stops me from getting anything done at all.
So I stressed and I had a hissy fit over the scene that I directed last Friday – yes, I was extremely unhappy with it. However, I failed to think about what would be achievable in that timeline for anyone’s standards…we got a whole scene thrown at us, it’s not just like we were give the chance to shoot the thing that we’ve been kicking around in our head for years…
Seeing other students edits of that scene I had a proved to me that it wasn’t as bad as I had thought. In fact, their edits were really great!
I like seeing someone’s vision as interpreted by another. Being able to step away is often so very difficult – but if you can learn, to give up control, it opens you up to many more possibilities, some perhaps better then what you thought in the first place. Even if you decide to follow through with your distinct concept, critiquing and analysing why you choose what you choose can be just as important.
