Doing an exercise with a classmate – even if not at the same time was a fantastic experience. You learn so much, each going in with different intentions. Simone and I filmed the initial Walks together, but me looking at movement of people, and inherent behaviour. She was looking at camera movement, and we were both exploring the camera as a window/camera as frame notions.
Looking at our edits, comparing the two it is clear to me that we are both seeking a different thing. I’m investigating what can come from a walk, and what can be implied implicitly, between the lines (between the cuts, through the angles, and through the lens). I think I succeeded in finding and emotive motivation, and editing my investigations to showcase this. I think Laurens walk is particularly conducive to this communication of emotion and I look forward to working with her and seeing where we can take it in the future.
Simone’s edits clearly showcase the camera movement. They are similar.
The coverage of my edits is not meant to be similar, in the shots chosen it is meant to communicate movement, and test moving on track with people – moving to their sensibilities.
Working with someone proved very useful, especially because Simone and I could you discuss the background and our ideas. Our theories an grounding come from a similar place and it is useful to look at where we converge and diverge in our opinions. I think while she searches for meaning that can come from between the camera and the framing and movement, I am searching to better understand the relationship between the camera and the person within the frame and how the two movements can work together and play off each other, whilst at the same time tying them together.
