Exploration: Lynch and methodology

I’ve been trying to read more about directors – get to understand what it is that enables their unique, auteur-istique, mark on the world. It’s even more helpful when these people do write about what that is. I think being able to understand, in yourself, the way you view the world will in turn highlight how that is different to the way others see the world. Then that can be translated and applied to film-making. Or to art. Or really to any discipline, not just the creative world.

David Lynch writes, and is interviewed, extensively on his work practice and his preaching of transcendental meditation. His book, Catching the Big Fish contains multiple short pieces of his thought train regarding certain topics. His thoughts around working with crew I found particularly pertinent.

It’s important that we are able to include those we work with and let them know how useful and important they are to our work. It’s not enough to simply rely on people’s good nature (especially when you’re not in a position to pay them). Clear and concise communication about what is going on around you (and them) is key.
To a degree, you need to know what’s going on. To an even greater extent, you need to be able to look like you know what’s going on to keep them on side.
