Our group have decided to create an augmented reality application for mobile phones that will contain various content for different platforms. We will design each element to be integrated into the application, while also making sure that each element will work as a stand alone piece. The augmented reality application for smartphones and tablets will present historical events or settings around Melbourne in an interesting and interactive way. We will be focusing on one historical person, John Mitchell Christie, a Police Detective in the 1860’s and then a Detective Inspector for the Customs Department from around the 1880’s. Christie was well-known for using disguises in order to catch criminals, and pre-dates the Sherlock Holmes character. The application and accompanying elements will explore his story using historical sources available to the public.

The application will be linked to a map feature, where people can visit the locations of historical events, and compare pictures from the time of the event. There will also be images and text explaining John Mitchell Christie’s story. We will develop Podcasts that will weave historical information with storytelling, and will use sound effects to illustrate points clearly. The webisodes are aimed at creating entertaining short episodes of Christie’s escapades and visualize some of his most daring feats.

We have delegated the responsibility of the tasks so that each person is responsible for a certain aspect of the project. Brontaë & Amy will oversee the application and the website production and will seek outside help in order to develop the application further. If help is not found, then with the assistance of the Adobe Enterprise Content Management program, the application can be developed by us. We aim to integrate Google Maps with the application and drop pins in historic locations for easy navigation. The pins will also link to the images and text articles and any other related media. The application will contain all of the media including audio files and video files and a link to the website that will also host all of the content.

Ellie will oversee the production of the audio components for the project. The auditory component will include podcast style episodes that contain mediated stories, mixed with factual content. The stories will consist of spoken word and soundscapes to build a holistic, factual story and maintain the listeners attention. The conclusion of the audio files can contain jumping off points for people to explore some of the other elements, include a website that will host all of the media content, in addition to the application.

I hope to further develop my videography and editing skills as I will be overseeing the video and webisode production for the project. The biopic webisode series will contain entry points for people to get involved in John Mitchell Christie’s story, and will reinforce the podcast audio content with a visual representation of the content. The webisode will recreate historic events based on factual information, however will be dramatized for audience engagement. I hope to develop my script-writing skills as I adapt factual information, and prose text into a dramatic visualization and I also hope to be faithful to the facts as much as possible, without compromising on the quality of the content. I also intent to develop my organisational skills as we will need to engage actors to recreate events, and hire costumes to be faithful to the facts. I also hope to develop my collaboration skills and work as a team on all facets of the production in order to produce the project. Website and application design and programming are new areas for me to explore and I hope that I will be able to contribute in a meaningful way, and learn new programs in order to assist in actualizing the project.
