We have been working on several ideas for our group project and have come up with a rough concept. We aim to investigate the formal elements (including mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound design and narrative elements) used to form audience expectations. This will include investigating several generic styles and attempting to reproduce the same audience expectations as other products from that genre/(s). We aim to do this by constructing distinct characters which will be associated with a specific genre, and replaying a similar story, however the point of view will shift each time therefore changing the focus and meaning of the story. For example a Goth who sees the darkness in the world will associate their worldview with that of a horror film, and the formal elements will be adjusted to meet this view.
Here is a preliminary list of genres we wish to investigate and emulate:
- Mockumentary
- Comedy
- Drama
- Fairy Tale/ Family
- Horror
- Film Noir
- Mystery
- Reality TV
- Thriller
In terms of creating something concrete we aim to complete 2-3 scenes and a trailer:
- We will do this by first researching common tropes and features of the genre we will be exploring. We will then apply these tropes to a situation that can be re-interpreted in several different ways (Similar to Rashomon or The Slap).
- After we have a draft outline of the story, we will then draft scripts for each of the characters simultaneously. When a completed draft of the script is achieved, we will commence casting for the roles and sourcing locations. We will complete a location recce prior to shooting and book the relevant gear and commence production. The editing will then begin and the editing styles and music choices will reflect the genre that is being explored. The colour grading will be an important part of this also.
