In my first Media 1 seminar, I discovered that the blog would make up a certain percentage of my final mark. This is an interesting concept and I will try to make it useful and interesting.
A large part of the assessment will be the creation of Media portraits. This is an interesting concept that is new to me. What is a media portrait? Cindy Sherman’s work was used as an example. She focuses on the representation of women particularly in media and attempts to subvert traditional expectations about certain stereotypes.
Untitled #98 by Cindy Sherman
The above picture shows a scantily dressed female with a robe draped over her shoulder. At first the image could be seen as seductive, however on closer inspection her expression is morose and a small bruise can be seen under her chin. This could give the impression that the woman is not seductive, but rather a survivor of abuse therefore changing the original perceived meaning.
