Making Connections

Connections

In our tutorial, Louise explained how students should start finding new networks to make connections in the industry and to try to build our career as quickly as possible. She told us that we should start researching on the type of media industry that we want to work in, and kindly gave us tips where we should start.

Then I remembered a study about how you will get recommended by your acquaintances, rather than your friend. Not to say that you should only be acquaintances with everyone, but I want to explain the odd fact that may/may not apply to everyone, but nevertheless a possibility.

Making connections is very important, especially in the creative industry, because everybody’s skill and creativity is different, and you have to make the biggest impression to stand out from the talents. Louise told us that Film directors do not get their job from advertisements in a newspaper, you would never see an ad job calling “open job director for a movie”. Rather directors are recognized and recommended by their peers.  My point is, try to be nice to everyone you meet, but also try searching for acquaintances that will help your career. As Louise said, try to see the work the have produced, and kindly contact them to ask if they have a space for an enthusiast looking for an opportunity.

By the way, speaking of networking I suddenly remember how easy people nowadays can connect to each other. Have you ever heard of the Six Degrees of Separation? Basically, you can connect you/someone with someone else with just 6 strands of relation. Am I related to George Clooney? I do sure hope so! A video from Veritasium explains the phenomena (the first scene is in Melbourne!):
