Introduction to Culture and Technology by Murphie and Potts is about the relationship between the two mediums, and how in today’s society their recently close relationship has sparked and created an influence of technology, which has changed society’s routine of living. Murphie and Potts evidently describe the relationship, where the is no actual definition of culture, rather focusing on human activities and the way people act towards their needs. Technological determinism was a new term that I learnt, described as: ‘the belief that technology is the agent of social change’.

Whilst reading this article, the first thing that came to my mind was the way tourists act when travelling. Experiencing it for a whole year, whilst travelling on my gap year really opened up this certain idea of the way technology works in the 21st century. Today, people aren’t actually experiencing it through their eyes, they are missing out on the moments and embracing beautiful views and places. It is all about taking photos and videos. In the reading, tourism is used as an example, as it has become such a technologically-based norm to record experiences through the media, and its effect has created a norm in todays culture.

Overall, I think this reading really opened up my eyes of the way society is changing due to the advancements of technology. I have always been aware of the change, however its effect of changing a culture entirely is extremely crazy. Without technology, so many relevant mediums like the media, and ways of communicating through technology models would not have become such an addiction, literally making ways of living so simple and convenient.
