Already have read the non-Narrative reading from Bordwell and Thomson, i decided to reflect this concept with my cinema studies blog post. All films are reflected through the knowledge from the reading. Though all the different narrative forms, and film examples we were shown, it was really fascinating. One the forms were apparent and clear, the more obvious the different forms appear within the spectrum of film.

Non-narrative is the act of challenging the formulaic expectation of a film, where filmmakers independently test the limits of film. It comes from a filmmaker’s motivation to create an experimental film to express their ideas or representations of personal experiences. From a viewers perspective, it may be a challenge or a questionable experience of using imagination to another level. In comparison to Holy Motors, a film that causes the audience to question the plot and story, this weeks non-narrative films were more directed to expectation rather than being confused and influenced. We were shown five films which demonstrates how non-narrative film has a comprehensive range, and allows artists of films to disorder of what a normal film may portray. Ballet Mecanique, an abstract film made up of an erray of combined shots, creating a rhythm combined with the sound, containing a lack of narrative form. The film contains a motif through a variety of different movements, shapes and lines, causing the audience to follow, finding some sort of conclusion within such a disordered film. The dante quartet, an abstract piece was a story made from art through a variety of water colours, reliant on rhythm and tone. I personally did not relate to this film, still having no connection or meaning from it. However, some who may be artistic and can find meaning through art may relate greatly.

Next, La Jetée, an associational film represents a narrative out of a sequence of individual photos and sound. The method of stop-motion dynamically involves the audience’s creativity to mentally put the sequences together, to make a story that makes sense. The Illustrated Auschwitz explores an associational and different way of telling a true story. The story from a Holocaust survivor is mixed with a number of images and videos from external films, which is merged together, to make a whole new meaning. The wizard of Oz is given a change of context, based on the survivors story. We have decided not to die is definitely abstract, an audio visual narrative through sound stunts and visual effects. This experimental film was much more modern, and didn’t seem as disordered.

Overall, all non-narrative films showed that experimenting with film allows film makers to explore all aspects of creativity, producing a beautiful visual purposely, or out of their control, a film that is out of the ordinary.
